Meet Felipe!
A graduate professional from Colombia who recently joining short program on forestry research in Forestry Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. He recently a graduate professional majored from a double program in Environmental Law and Latin American Literature from the University of Los Andes, in Bogotá, Colombia, and with work experience related to social research and legal assessment for the constitution of private protected areas in accordance with Colombian law.
He is experienced in working with “Fundación Proyecto Primates”, an NGO created by two of the most important primatologists of Colombia, under the main purpose of protecting the Spider Monkey, an endemic and critically endangered primate. His role was as Social Assistant, coordinating a local festival that involved the participation of seven rural communities towards celebrating and promoting conservation along the middle basin of the Magdalena River. Lately, he has been focused on assessing landowners who are interested in constituting Private Reservoirs for forest protection in their land.
He is eager to learn about mangrove forests, one of the key ecosystems for the wellbeing of global coastal communities (especially under the threat of increasing extreme conditions due to climate change), currently monitored and studied in different parts of Indonesia by the Forestry Department at UMM, which aims to expand mangroves’ population in the country through reforestation and restauration.
His expectations for the program are mainly centered in engaging in an enriching cultural exchange while learning more of these unique ecosystems, 20% of their global distribution concentrates in Indonesia, and doing so while understanding the different dimensions of conservation, such as the social responsibility and the importance of cooperating with local leaders and associations towards implementing measures that can create a long-lasting impact and benefit.
