Forestry department was established in the 1999/2000 academic year under the Faculty of Agriculture-Animal Science (FPP) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), according to the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 445/DIKTI/kep/1998. Since 30 January 2014, the forestry department has been accredited with a B rating according to the Decree of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia number 003/BAN-PT/Ak-VII/S1/I/2014. In 2017. The forestry department accreditation rating is B from 2007-2017 according to BAN-PT Decree No. 010/BAN-PT/Ak-X/S1/V/2007; BAN-PT No. 020/BAN-PT/Ak-XV/S1/VII/2012; BAN-PT No. 2016/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/VI/2017. Then In 2022 the accreditation of the forestry study program becomes 'Very Good' according to BAN-PT No.9896/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/VIII/2021.
According to the vision and mission, as well as the main tasks and functions, the forestry department has implemented the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, including teaching education, research, and community service. The forestry department does not hold long-distance classes and submits the EPSBED report to Higher Education every semester.
The forestry department has graduated as many as 330 alums from various regions. Most alumns have been absorbed as civil servants, BUMN/BUMS employees, and entrepreneurs in the forestry sector.
The Forestry department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang has four research interests, including:
1. Interest in forest management .
2. Interest in forest silviculture.
3. Interest in forest product technology .
4. Research interest in forest resource conservation.
